Wilton and Barford V2

In February 2011, I was approached by Wilton and Barford Primary School, with regard to adding additional features to the website.

The list of changes were vast enough that result in changing most of the website. I took the opportunity to suggest a re design, as since building the website over a year ago, I now use HTML5 and CSS3 techniques, as well as having improved Javascript and Design skills.

Poole Salvation Army

August 2007 – Original Website design.
Project was put on hold for 3 years due to change in management on client side.
April 2010 – New Website Design
September – Website in Production

In August 2007 I was approached by Poole Salvation Army to redesign their website and create a web administration system so that anyone can log in and add to the sites content with ease. The design was completed but I was not permitted to continue with the website due to a change in management. 3 years later I was approached again by the Army to create a new website. During the 3 year wait my web skills had greatly improved and when I reviewed my previous design, I decided to redesign and give it a little more life.

Despite long negotiations, the project was built in 3 weeks. The website is cross browser compatible, tested in IE6 – IE9, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome. This is the biggest website I have built to date using HTML5.

New Website

Updated to HTML5 5th August 2010.
The original Mannouch.co.uk was rushed over one weekend, and I have been meaning to redesign it to web standards for some time! The intention of the new website was to create a visually pleasing website that is easy to use.

All projects are databased, and every time I add to my online portfolio, the RSS feed will update. Twitter feeds are fed direct the homepage every time I update. Work is categorised and can easily be filtered if you are looking for a certain type of work. I intend to (with the clients permission) share with you future projects throughout their development stages leading to the final product. Images and Video will be uploaded to give you full coverage of the projects.

Wilton and Barford

In Summer 2009, Wilton and Barford Primary School approached me asking to redesign their website. The main purpose of the redesign was to have a good looking website, user friendly, and to have an easy to use administrators section (employees only) where you can login and edit the website.

Major features included on the website are Newsletter downloads, Photo Albums, the Class pages, and the Administrators section. My most proud part of the website is titled the 'Class Editor'. From this page, staff can add, edit and delete Classes, Teachers, Work, Homework, Newsletters, Spelling Sheets, and Photos. All content added to the editor can be assigned to a class which will then be presented on the main website in their class page.

Human

This small project was handed to me by a former colleague of Interactive Media Production. The real purpose of the Animation was not made completely clear but I do know it was featured in a Medical related Interactive Application.

The brief stated that the animation should last 15-20 seconds and would feature a silhouette of a human, where 2 rings would scan up and down the body. A simple start and stop to the ring motion was required so the animation could loop. 3ds Max was used for creating the character, rings, and basic silhouette. Autodesk Combustion was used to enhance the blue silhouette, and add lighting effects to the rings.

Temple of Apollo

For my major project in my second year of FdSc CGI 3D Modelling and Animation, I chose to recreate the Temple of Apollo, from Pompeii Italy. In May 2006 I visited Pompeii, and when told I had complete freedom when it came to my major project, I jumped at the opportunity to make the Temple in 3D.

In 79AD Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered the city with 20metres of ash and pumice. The only parts of the Temple that remain to this day are the base and 2 of the 28 surrounding pillars. As no one really knows what the Temple used to look like I took it upon myself to do as much research as possible in order to generate my own interpretation of what it looked like. The final animation features the Temple in its present day ruined form slowly regenerating to its restored state.

Space Ship

The purpose of this assignment was to create a basic animation, as the main focus was on adding special effects, and becoming familiar with Autodesk Combustion. The brief stated that it should be a short animation created in the style of a computer game or film trailer, and to use Combustion to add effects and credits.

My chosen form was a computer game. Having special effects in mind, I thought it would be appropriate to have an animation featuring a space ship, as it would create the opportunity to use many effects. The final idea was to have the end product as a loading screen to a computer game. The user, having clicked the 'Start Mission' button, would be presented with a loading screen featuring their space ship taking off and heading into space.

Endsleigh Lodge

Endsleigh Lodge is a genuine building that is currently being built. As a major assignment in my second year of FdSc CGI 3D Modelling and Animation, my Tutor kindly handed me a design that her company had been working. The brief was to fully create the building as well as the surrounding environment. Once built, a Photomontage was to be created merging an image of the current lay of land with the 3D model, as a means of showing the client what the finished product will look like.

Provided for me were CAD drawings, tree surveys, above sea level measurements and photos taken of the grounds.

White House

After focusing my 3D Architecture studies on the interior of buildings, it was now time to look at the exterior. One of my main challenges with the White House was to carefully control how light reacted with the white structure, as if not done with care may result in the building looking more grey than white. Key to achieving this, the angle of the daylight was essential to getting a realistic looking render.

The hardest part of the project was creating the buildings windows. In previous projects I had been using a simple window tool, which would automatically cut the squared shape into the wall, but the windows on the White House have a lot more detail and were in need of much attention. The solution was to use 'Splines' to draw a 2D shape of the windows, and from there use the 'Shape Merge' tool. If done correctly, the Shape Merge process would cut the shape into the side of a selected object. From there I was able to extrude the shape out from the side of the wall and repeat the process for other windows.

House Interior

Beginning with this project I chose to focus my second year studies on 3D Architecture. The main purpose of the 'House Interior', was to become familiar with Architect software, and effectively make use of the Daylight System, Architecture and Design Materials, and the Mental Ray Renderer.

Before commencing with 3ds Max, I was first Introduced to AutoCAD. Here I learned how to understand Building Plans and how to put them to good use in my 3D work. From that I was able to export relevant data from AutoCAD and import into 3ds Max, where I was able to create the building accurately and to scale.

Lincoln Memorial Statue

As my first project into the second year of FdSc CGI 3D Modelling and Animation, the main objective was to gain experience in Patch Modelling. Up until this point I had only been creating 3D objects by extruding shapes and adjusting them where necessary. Patch Modelling takes a different approach where you extrude only one edge to a face rather than the whole face itself, and as a result can produce much more detail.

In this assignment I chose to create the Lincoln Memorial Statue, primarily focusing on facial features through the use of Patch Modelling.

Manorside Athletic

In summer 2008 I was approached by a local school asking if I could make a logo for their football team. It was their first year as a team and were entering into a Sunday league.

The Schools logo is of a sun, so I thought it be appropriate to incorporate a similar shape in the final logo.

George

George was my major project in my first year of FdSc CGI 3D Modelling and animation. The overall idea of George was to have an animation featuring him and his imaginary friend going on an adventure. A basic design of the look of the character was given to me, but I was left with complete freedom as to how the story unfolds and the design of both George and his friend.

My idea of George's friend is his favourite TV (bumbling) Superhero, Mr Pringle. With this in mind, and with the target audience being of toddler age, I decided that a learning element should be added to the animation. Having a Superhero as a friend, the idea of the duo saving someone, quickly sprung to mind. The final animation features George and Mr Pringle saving Teddy from crossing the road unsafely, and teaching him how to do it correctly.

I have included character designs, test animations, an Animatic, and the final animation.

Kidz Klub

Every fortnight, the Kidz Klub is held at Poole Salvation Army. Each club focuses on a moral and Bible teaching. Through this, the kids play games, sing songs and overall learn from teachings in the Bible in a 'fun way'. A new club theme is introduced each school term which could be 'Wild West', 'The Future', 'Urban', 'Pirates' etc. As part of the Kidz Klub team I specialise in the 'technical side' throughout the evening. I play the music and run the PowerPoint. On top of this I design the PowerPoint backgrounds based on the current theme, and make sure appropriate music is selected for games.

The Lighthouse

Every Christmas Poole Salvation Army host a Christmas Carol Concert, usually held at Poole Lighthouse. It's a big event of which the Mayor of Poole attends. In 2007 and 2008 I was asked to create the main poster advertising the event, as well as the backgrounds featured in the evenings PowerPoint. Each year's event is themed, so a certain type of design or colour scheme was required.

The Clamp

This is my first project from FdSc CGI 3D Modelling and Animation. The overall intention of the assignment was to demonstrate skills learned in 3ds Max, having been recently introduced to it. I had been handed a technical drawing of a Clamp device, and was required to build each component to scale in a 3D world. With the Clamp modelled and textured, the brief stated that during the animation the components must come together to form the Clamp through the use of 'modifiers' and basic animation tools.

BU Tour

BU Tour was my chosen final project for BA(Hons) Interactive Media Production. The idea was to build Talbot Campus in 3D using Cinema 4D, and by using Unity 3D, convert it into a browser based interactive environment. The main purpose of the project was to allow people to search for locations within the campus that they do not know the location of, and get a 'satnav like' instruction (in the 3D world) showing how to get to the destination from any specified location within the campus. The target audience is mainly students, but with the added addition of making it online, it is available for all people intending to visit the Campus.

Student Projects

Here is a selection of small projects that were handed to me during my final year of BA(Hons) Interactive Media Production. 3 students approached me asking for 3D related jobs to be completed.

Project Aurora was a Flash based application which registers sound levels from a microphone, interprets those levels and generates both on screen and projected visuals. It was intended as an art installation piece, as well as having strong use in the learning disabilities sector. It was my job to create a short animation that would be presented at the Pitch, demonstrating how Aurora would be set up and how it would operate.

Sailing 24/7 was an Interactive 'learn how to sail' DVD that is based on the competent crew and day skipper syllabus. Sailing 24/7 takes the audience through an interactive desk allowing them to explore the topics at their own speed. It was my job to create screen shots and a small 3D boat animation that would be included on the DVD.

Flash Dance was an Interactive dancing game built in Flash, made for Internet play. A webcam or keyboard could be used to operate the on screen character. It was my job to create background environments for the characters to dance in.

Call of Duty Gamers Community

Call of Duty Gamers Community (CGC) was a community website for Call of Duty players, fans and clans. I was approached by a small group of people asking whether I could create a website so that gamers could visit, download new content, and seek out any information related to the game and discuss via a forum.

The main focal point of the website was around downloadable content, where users could easily search for maps, skins, patches etc. It was my mission to make files easy to access and easy to add to the website. In order to achieve this, PHP and MySQL was used to make an Administrators page, where community leaders could login and update the website with ease.

PSP Mobile

This brief was to design an application/product for a hand held device. PSP Mobile is flashed based concept demonstrating how the PSP would operate if it had mobile phone functions. The idea is to have a microphone/sim card device attach via the USB input on the PSP. A simple application would need to be installed to the PSP for the product to work.

I have provided the flash demo in the Video section below. Use the PSP controls to navigate through the Mobile application.

Hubert

Hubert was a 3-man group project with the intention of combining 2D, 3D and real-time video. My responsibilities were to create the character in 3D, film footage, and to edit the final project together.

The name of our character is Hubert. He is an easy to love character who comes to life from a 2D printout left on the desk by his creator. Hubert soon learns how to move and walk, and finds his way out into the world of three dimensions. He then decides to explore his surroundings, but its not long before he runs into a bit of trouble.

Escape from Sin City

Following up on my Shockwave Game tests, my brief at the time was to create a browser game using Shockwave and the Havok physics engine, and to base it on a recent film. One of the biggest films around at the time was Frank Millers, Sin City. Having already seen the film I chose to base the game on the story, but not featuring it in any of the events seen in the film.

Your character has been targeted by the Police for questioning and possible imprisonment. The mission is to escape central Sin City and make it to Old Town, a safe haven from the Police.

Shockwave Games

As a build up towards creating Escape from Sin City. I chose to experiment with Director MX 2004 and the Havok physics engine by creating some mini games. The overall objective by gaining further knowledge of combining imported 3D with Director and a better understanding of the coding language behind the Havok physics engine.

The first is a simple gun game inspired by Namco's 'Time Crisis'. With 3 lives, a target of 100 points and use of scenery to avoid bullets, you must eliminate the attacking soldiers.

The second is what I can only describe as a demolition game. Your overall target is to destroy the bridge by any means necessary. You only have 100 bullets, so use them wisely.

Theft

This was a BA (hons) IMP project and was my first venture into a flash based cartoon/animation. The brief stated that characters were to be created using Photoshop and/or Flash, and the story could be any of my choosing.

The story is set around a Thief who overhears two off duty guards discussing a Diamond which has recently been put into storage. He then sets out to obtain the Diamond, but not before running into his own little obstacles, and eventually fumbling at the last hurdle.

When creating the characters I chose to take pictures of people, and in Photoshop, make use of the pen tablet. A bold line would be drawn around the outside of the body, and thinner lines used to define facial and body features. Colour samples were taken in the area of the body I would be colouring to give a relatively accurate representation.
